100 Important 20th-Century
Photobooks
By David
H. Tippit
In
1991, I sold my photobook collection to the University of Colorado.
After the sale, it occurred to me that I did not own a single
photobook. Being a long time photobook collector, I decided
to form a small, new library comprised of a 100 important photobooks
of the 20th century. Below is the list of 100 photobooks that
I selected with over a period of years with the advice of numerous
other experts in the field. I am often asked by collectors,
curators, dealers, and others about this list of photobooks,
so I have decided to make it available here on this website.
Any such list
of 100 important photobooks will contain different titles that
are dependent upon the preferences of the list maker and the criteria
used to select books. However, I would expect that about 65 to
75 of the books in this list below would also appear on similar
lists formed by other experts in the field.
The criteria
I used for selecting books for this list are as follows: 1) I
selected the important photographers of the 20th century who published
books, and; 2) I then selected the books of these photographers
that I believe had a major influence on other photographers, or
the field of photography in general. The list is not based upon
the rarity, purchase price, or beauty of the object.
Books that are periodicals, or part of a series or serials, are
not included in the list of 100 photobooks. These books are included
in a separate list that follows of ten important periodicals and
serials in photography. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the
participation, help and advice of Andrew Cahan and Steve Daiter,
and Alex Sweetman in formulating this list.
