Hidden Depths, Jaques Henri Lartigue
A collection
of the finest stereo photographs of Jacques Henri Lartigue.
"Few people realize, however, that many of his most famous photographs
have literally been cut in half for printing. These photographs were
originally taken in stereo (also known as 3D) which requires a pair
of images to work effectively. When properly reproduced, using both
images, they show all the depth of the original scene. ..."

Book
Review
In Situ by DOUGLAS MELLOR
At first I couldn’t quite figure out what this book was about
filled with marvelous photographs by Douglas Mellor. I went through
the book studying each photograph, flipping back to the previous
one, then forward again to the next, trying to put some sense to
the way Mr. Mellor put the book together. There certainly was a
purpose. Then, it hit me all at once, its visual poetry.
Not the simplistic romantic type that many students of photography
attempt to create. No, these photographs were created by a master
photographer and sequenced in this book with the care and attention
that only is achieved by seeing and feeling outside of the traditional
photographic frame.

In
Situ is
a book that should not be taken lightly. This book is of images
that are so well crafted that they draw you into them slowly with
the same painstaking detail that they have been created. The introduction
by Paul Caponigro, begins; “The depth of D.W. Mellor’s
introspective nature is manifest in his photography – images
of clarity, intensity, and thoughtfulness.”
Each
photograph, like the still life paintings that they are modeled
after, demonstrates Mellor’s artistry of composition, lighting,
texture, and subtlety. These photographs are juxtaposed with details
of iconic images found in tapestries, pen and ink drawings, and
peeling wallpaper of images in an age long gone. The poetry found
in this book ebbs and flows with the “Abstract” images
that is an exercise in form and tone. At first viewing the images
have a traditional quality to them, looking closer, they become
surreal. They take on a level of depth that only begins to surface
upon careful examination. This book leads the viewer on a journey
into an aesthetic discussion about the classical world of art
viewed from the perspective of one who has studied and reached
his own conclusions. Mellor builds an argument for maintaining
and preserving the past while at the same time creating new interpretations.
In
Situ is a book that you can return to many times over and
gain new insights into the photographs. The book has a very intimate
feel about it. This book is like any great literature or poetry
that you have discover, you want to share it with someone close
to you.
